Smart Thermostats and Radiator Valves in 2026: IKEA LILJEBAGGE, Tado X, Netatmo ORIGINAL and Home Assistant

Heating season is when a smart home pays for itself, or annoys everyone. In autumn 2026 the choice of smart thermostats and radiator valves widened dramatically: IKEA announced a Matter radiator thermostat at about €15, Tado slimmed its Smart Thermostat X down to 17.8 mm, Netatmo rebuilt its valves around Zigbee and Matter, Bosch linked its heat pumps to its smart thermostats, and Apple announced thermostats from LG and Schneider for North American homes. Here is how to pick the right device for your heating system, connect it to Home Assistant and avoid the classic traps.

Step 1: identify your heating system

The single most important question is not the brand. It is what heats your home. A radiator valve is useless on forced-air heating, and a wall thermostat cannot regulate rooms individually on a hot-water radiator system.

The 2026 line-up, device by device

IKEA LILJEBAGGE: the €15 Matter valve

IKEA's radiator thermostat was spotted at €14.99 on its German site, as Frandroid reported. It replaces the manual knob on a hot-water radiator, shows the setpoint on a small display, adjusts in half-degree steps from 5 °C (frost protection), runs about 18 months on two AA batteries and exercises the valve against limescale. It speaks Matter over Thread, so it joins Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or Home Assistant without IKEA's DIRIGERA hub, provided you have a Thread border router. Rival heads usually cost €50 to €80. No release date had been set for Germany or France.

Tado Smart Thermostat X (2nd generation)

Tado claims the thinnest smart thermostat on the market at 17.8 mm, with a matte white finish, a hidden circular touch interface and a programmable top button for humidity, schedule resume or a 30-minute boost. Disposable batteries are replaced by a USB-C rechargeable battery rated for over a year. It is built on Matter and Thread and aimed squarely at former Nest owners in Europe. The wired starter kit costs £159.99 / €179.99, the wireless kit £169.99 / €199.99.

Netatmo ORIGINAL: a clean break

Netatmo's new range, detailed by Maison et Domotique, uses Zigbee valves and thermostats behind a mains-powered Thermo Hub that exposes everything to Matter. The Smart Radiator Valve ORIGINAL costs €59.99 with open-window detection, child lock and roughly 18 months of battery; a home can have up to 24 valves. Packs start at €119.99 (valve and hub for apartments), €139.99 (wired thermostat and hub) or €149.99 (wireless). The catch: ORIGINAL cannot be mixed with older Netatmo Energy valves, which used a proprietary radio.

TIDE Touch and Bosch: the utility and heat-pump angle

Universal Electronics and the energy supplier Eneco launched the TIDE Touch thermostat for the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, with temperature, humidity and proximity sensors refined over a year of field trials (Business Wire). Bosch announced at IFA that Bosch and Buderus heat pumps can now be controlled by Bosch Smart Home thermostats, as its heat-pump sales grew 40% in Germany in the first half of 2026.

LG and Schneider thermostats for Apple Home

For North American forced-air homes, Apple Home Collection adds an LG Smart Thermostat and a Schneider Home Smart Thermostat, both from $199.95, plus room sensors from $39.95, with availability from December. Both need constant 24 V power; if your wall has no C-wire, a $24.95 C-Wire Power Adapter is offered. Details are in our Apple Home 2026 guide.

Room-by-room heating in practice

Valves shine when rooms are used differently: a home office heated from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., bedrooms cooler at night, a guest room on frost protection most of the week. Three rules make the difference:

  1. Measure where you live, not at the radiator. A valve senses the air right next to hot metal. Pair it with a room sensor when your platform allows it.
  2. Use open-window detection, built into Netatmo valves, or build it in Home Assistant with a door sensor.
  3. Avoid fighting controllers. If valves and a boiler thermostat both have schedules, one must lead.

Connecting valves and thermostats to Home Assistant

Matter makes this far simpler than in previous years. Thread devices such as LILJEBAGGE or Tado X pair through Home Assistant's Matter integration once a Thread border router is on the network. Netatmo ORIGINAL arrives through the Thermo Hub's Matter bridge. Since 2026.10.1, Home Assistant applies Matter thermostat calibration limits according to the cluster revision (±2.5 °C up to revision 6, ±12.7 °C from revision 7), which fixes offset settings on some valves. Our Home Assistant 2026 guide covers that release.

A simple "window open" rule in YAML looks like this:

automation:
  - alias: "Office: heating off when window opens"
    trigger:
      - platform: state
        entity_id: binary_sensor.office_window
        to: "on"
        for: "00:02:00"
    action:
      - service: climate.set_hvac_mode
        target:
          entity_id: climate.office_radiator
        data:
          hvac_mode: "off"

Add a second automation that restores the schedule when the window closes. If you heat by presence, pair your valves with an mmWave sensor; our presence sensor guide explains why they beat classic motion sensors in an office or living room.

Installation: adapters, batteries and the first week

Fitting a radiator valve takes minutes, but three details decide whether it works well. First, the adapter: radiator bodies use different threads, which is why Netatmo ships six adapters in the box. Check yours before ordering. Second, power: most valves run on AA batteries (about 18 months for LILJEBAGGE and Netatmo), while Tado moved its thermostat to a rechargeable USB-C battery. Battery valves do not relay a Zigbee mesh, so Netatmo sells a €19.99 repeater for large homes. Third, calibration: let the valves run a few days, then compare their reported temperature with a separate sensor and apply an offset where needed.

Which one should you buy?

  • Tight budget, many radiators: IKEA LILJEBAGGE, once it ships, if you already have a Thread border router.
  • Former Nest user in Europe: Tado Smart Thermostat X, with Matter and Thread.
  • Apartment with collective heating: Netatmo's valve and Thermo Hub pack, without a boiler thermostat.
  • North American house with forced air and Apple devices: the LG or Schneider thermostat from Apple Home Collection.
  • Heat pump owner: start with your manufacturer's integration, such as Bosch Smart Home for Bosch and Buderus units.

What the law says in France

French decree no. 2023-444 requires automatic room-by-room (or zone) temperature regulation. A decree of December 26, 2025 postponed the deadline for existing buildings to January 1, 2030; new buildings whose permit is filed from January 1, 2027 must comply from that date, according to Service-Public.fr. The device must offer scheduling and at least comfort, eco, frost-protection and off modes; it does not need to be connected.

How much can you really save?

Vendors love round numbers. Netatmo's "€250 a year" comes from a 2023 user study. The more reliable rule of thumb is that lowering the setpoint by 1 °C saves roughly 7% of heating energy over a season. Smart valves help by making lower temperatures livable: warm where you are, cooler where you are not. The cheapest saving is still a schedule you actually keep.

What to remember

  • Choose by heating system first: valves for radiators, 24 V thermostats for forced air.
  • IKEA LILJEBAGGE (about €15) and Tado X use Matter over Thread: you need a Thread border router.
  • Netatmo ORIGINAL is Zigbee behind a Matter hub and is not compatible with older Netatmo valves.
  • In France, room-by-room regulation becomes mandatory for existing homes on January 1, 2030.
  • Savings come from lower setpoints and good schedules, not from the app.

FAQ

Do I need a hub for IKEA LILJEBAGGE?

Not IKEA's DIRIGERA, but you need a Thread border router such as a recent HomePod mini, Apple TV or a Home Assistant Thread dongle.

Can I mix Netatmo ORIGINAL with my old Netatmo valves?

No. The new range is Zigbee-only and requires replacing the thermostat, gateway and valves.

Do smart valves work on electric radiators?

No. They are designed for hot-water radiators fed by a boiler or heat pump.

What is a C-wire?

The common wire that gives a 24 V thermostat constant power. Without it, use the manufacturer's power adapter.

Is a connected thermostat required by French law?

No. A programmable regulation device is required by 2030 for existing homes; it does not have to be connected.
