Matter smart shades in 2026: GE made-to-order vs Eve MotionBlinds, and Home Assistant

Matter smart shades in 2026: GE made-to-order vs Eve MotionBlinds, and Home Assistant

Motorised blinds have long been the awkward corner of the smart home. Off-the-shelf models rarely fit the window, custom ones mean an installer visit and a proprietary bridge, and retrofit kits only work if your existing blind has the right tube. On October 20, 2026, GE Lighting (a Savant company) tried to fix the first two problems at once: its GE Smart Shades are now available made to order, still running on Matter over Thread, from $299.99.

Rather than rewrite the press release, this guide starts from your window. We look at the three realistic ways to automate a roller blind in late 2026 — a new made-to-measure Matter shade, a Matter retrofit motor, or a Bluetooth/Zigbee add-on — and at what each one looks like once it lands in Home Assistant.

Key takeaways

  • GE Smart Shades now come in custom sizes from 28 to 72 in wide (71–183 cm) and 35 to 110 in tall (89–279 cm), with new 3% solar and designer fabrics and a reverse-roll option for windows with handles.
  • Made-to-order shades start at $299.99 and are sold only on GE Lighting's own store and its Amazon storefront. GE has announced US pricing only, with nothing for Europe.
  • Matter over Thread means no GE bridge or cloud account: you need a Thread border router (HomePod mini, recent Nest or Echo hub, or Home Assistant with a Thread radio).
  • If you already own a decent roller blind, Eve's MotionBlinds Upgrade Kit puts a Matter-over-Thread motor inside the existing tube from €149.95.
  • In Home Assistant, all of these options end up as a standard cover entity with position control, so your automations stay the same whichever you choose.

Step 1: measure the window before you pick a technology

The single biggest change in GE's update is not radio, it is size. At launch, at CES in January 2026, the shades came in a handful of fixed widths. The original GE press release listed pre-sized models for windows up to 76 inches tall. The made-to-order range, as detailed by HomeKit News and CE Pro, covers:

  • Width: 28 to 72 inches (71 to 183 cm);
  • Height: 35 to 110 inches (89 to 279 cm), enough for most patio doors and tall picture windows;
  • Mounting: inside or outside the frame;
  • Roll direction: regular, or reverse roll so the fabric drops further from the glass and clears window handles.

That last point matters a lot in European homes, where tilt-and-turn windows have a handle sticking out into the room. A standard roller drops close to the pane and can catch on it; reverse roll pushes the fabric out. If your window is narrower than 28 inches (71 cm), the GE range is not for you, and a retrofit motor or a smaller bead-chain driver becomes the realistic route.

Fabrics and finishes

The original blackout and translucent fabrics are joined by a 3% solar fabric, which cuts glare and heat while keeping some view outside, plus a set of designer light-filtering and blackout fabrics. Every fabric pairs with an aluminium housing in black or white, and GE says the shades are assembled in the USA. Each shade ships with a one-channel programmable remote and a magnetic charging cable.

Step 2: choose between new shade, retrofit motor or add-on

Here is how the main options compare on the points that actually decide a purchase. Prices are the manufacturers' list prices checked on November 1, 2026.

One detail worth knowing: when we checked GE's own store on November 1, the pre-sized blackout model was listed between $334.99 and $369.99 depending on width, above the $299.99 "from" price quoted for the range. Configure your exact size and fabric before you budget.

When a retrofit motor makes more sense

If your blinds are in good condition, replacing them is the expensive and wasteful path. Eve's kit slides a motor into the existing roller tube and replaces the chain. In February 2026 Eve added a second motor for small 25–30 mm tubes (€149.95), alongside the original 38–51 mm version (€199.95). Eve says the battery lasts up to a year with typical use and charges over USB-C, and the kit needs no Eve account or cloud. Measure the outer diameter of your tube first: that one number decides whether this route is open to you.

Step 3: check your Thread border router

Thread devices do not connect to Wi-Fi. They join a low-power mesh that reaches your network through a Thread border router. GE lists compatibility with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings through Matter, and any of their Thread-capable hubs will do: a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K, a second-generation Nest Hub, a recent Echo with Thread, or a SmartThings hub. As HomeKit News points out, without one the shade simply cannot join.

If you are unsure which box in your home already acts as a border router, our 2026 Matter hub comparison lists them, and the new Echo Dot with its built-in Thread hub is now one of the cheapest ways in. For a mesh-heavy house, our look at Zigbee vs Matter over Thread lab results explains why battery devices like shades benefit from a dense network of mains-powered routers.

Home Assistant and compatibility

This is where the three technologies converge. In Home Assistant, every option above becomes a standard cover entity, so the same automations work whatever you buy.

  • GE Smart Shades and Eve MotionBlinds: add them through the Matter integration. You can commission them directly into Home Assistant, or pair them in Apple Home or Google Home first and then share them to Home Assistant with Matter multi-admin. Home Assistant needs a Thread network it can reach, either its own radio or a border router from another ecosystem.
  • SwitchBot Roller Shade: the SwitchBot integration talks to it locally over Bluetooth and exposes a cover entity with position control. A Bluetooth proxy near the window helps.
  • Aqara Roller Shade Driver E1: pairs directly with ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT, no Aqara hub required.

Two automations are worth setting up on day one. First, a sun-based schedule with an offset (open 30 minutes after sunrise, close at sunset). Second, a heat-protection rule: if a south-facing room passes a set temperature while nobody is home, lower the shade to 20%. Pair that with a presence sensor, as in our mmWave presence sensor guide, and the shade stops fighting you when you are actually in the room.

What we have not verified

Rocks on Galaxy has not tested GE's shades. GE does not publish which Matter device type revision or optional features (such as tilt, which a roller shade does not need) are exposed, nor how battery level is reported. Up to six months per charge is GE's figure and will drop with frequent moves. Treat both as claims until independent reviews arrive.

Who is it for? The Rocks opinion

  • Buy GE made-to-order if you are in the US, have odd-sized or very tall windows, want a clean factory-made look, and run Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or Home Assistant. It is the first sub-$300 custom shade we know of that needs no proprietary bridge.
  • Pick Eve MotionBlinds if you live in Europe, already own decent roller blinds with a compatible tube, and want the same Matter-over-Thread benefits for less money and less waste.
  • Pick SwitchBot or Aqara if you want the cheapest path into Home Assistant and do not care about Matter, or your blinds use a bead chain.
  • Skip all of them if you have no Thread border router and do not want to buy one, or your windows already have wired roller shutters: a wired module is a better fit there.

Our view: GE's move is good news mainly because it shows that Matter over Thread is becoming the default for window coverings, not a premium option. For a reader in France or Italy, the realistic choice today is still a retrofit. But if GE or a European brand brings made-to-measure Matter shades to the EU at a similar price, we would pick that over any bridge-based system.

FAQ

Do GE Smart Shades need a GE hub or app?

No. They use Matter over Thread, so you add them to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Home Assistant directly. You do need a Thread border router, and each shade also ships with a remote control.

Are the made-to-order GE shades sold in Europe?

Not as announced. GE quoted US pricing and sells the custom range only through its own online store and its Amazon storefront. No European launch has been announced.

Can Home Assistant control the shade's exact position?

Yes for all the options in this guide: Matter shades, the SwitchBot Roller Shade and the Aqara driver are exposed as cover entities with a position from 0 to 100%.

How long does the battery last?

GE says up to six months per charge and the battery recharges in place with a magnetic cable. Eve claims up to a year for its retrofit motor. Both depend on how often the shade moves.
