Tesla has officially postponed the unveiling of its new Roadster: originally scheduled for Thursday, October 1, 2026, it will now take place on Thursday, October 15. The automaker cites severe weather forecasts for Central Texas, as the event can only be held outdoors.

From October 1 to October 15: a two-week delay

The announcement came on September 28. That same morning, according to Electrek, Tesla had warned guests that the October 1 demo might be rescheduled because of the weather. A few hours later, the company confirmed the delay in a post on X.

The new date also falls on a Thursday, exactly two weeks after the original one. No time or detailed schedule has been shared yet.

The official reason: the weather

Tesla attributes the decision to conditions forecast by local meteorologists. Here's the post from the company's official account, as reported by Teslarati:

"We've been tracking the weather closely with local meteorologists, but given the severe conditions predicted & because this event can only be held outdoors, we've made the difficult decision to reschedule. New date is October 15. Additional details to follow."

The forecast for October 1 was indeed poor. Electrek cites Open-Meteo data for McGregor, updated on September 28: an 82% chance of precipitation that Thursday, with thunderstorms, gusts around 30 mph and more than 4 inches of rain. The site notes, however, that the same forecast showed a clear improvement by the following weekend.

An open-air event in McGregor, near Waco

The "outdoors" detail matters. According to Electrek, the demo is set to take place at SpaceX's rocket engine test site in McGregor, Texas, near Waco. Teslarati, for its part, says the Roadster will be unveiled in Waco.

The open-air format explains why a single stormy spell is enough to upend the schedule: hosting guests and staging a dynamic demo in rain and wind raises both safety and logistics concerns.

What's promised, and what isn't

Officially, Tesla is sticking to two pieces of information: an event dedicated to the Roadster and a new date, October 15. Everything else is, for now, press reporting or rumor.

  • Confirmed by Tesla: the delay, the weather reason, the outdoor-only nature of the event and the October 15 date, with "additional details" to come.
  • Reported by the press, not confirmed by Tesla: Electrek has claimed since August that the plan is to make the Roadster "hover" using a set of cold-gas thrusters developed by SpaceX, with no one on board and spectators kept several hundred meters away.
  • Interpretations: Teslarati mentions an FAA airspace restriction, which some see as a hint of an aerial demo, but which could just as well relate to a drone show or be meant to keep drones away.

No spec sheet, final price or delivery date was announced alongside the delay. It's best to wait for October 15 before drawing conclusions about performance or the exact content of the demo.

The Roadster, no stranger to delays

This latest slip is part of a long series. Electrek recalls that the prototype was unveiled in November 2017, with production promised for 2020 at the time. The so-called "flying" demo was then supposed to happen by the end of 2025, then on April 1, 2026, then in late April, then "maybe in a month or so," then in August, and finally on October 1.

Electrek is also skeptical of the weather explanation alone, arguing that a storm that clears in two or three days doesn't necessarily justify a two-week delay. That's the outlet's analysis, not confirmed information: Tesla has given no reason other than the weather.

Production in 2027 or 2028: don't confuse it with the demo

October 15 will be, at best, a public presentation. It shouldn't be confused with a commercial launch. According to Electrek, Roadster production is still slated for "2027 or 2028."

In other words, even if the demo goes as planned, first deliveries aren't expected anytime soon. Teslarati also notes that the Roadster is available to order again after a brief pause, though that doesn't change the production timeline.

How to follow the event

Tesla has promised "additional details" without saying when. The most reliable channel remains the official @Tesla account on X, where the delay was announced.
