Vertical farming is not dead, it is getting automated. Australian company Stacked Farm is preparing to open its A$150 million Melbourne facility, as reported by VerticalFarmDaily on October 6, 2026.

The Melbourne mega-farm

  • Opening scheduled for Q4 2026
  • 10,000 m² inside a fully enclosed, climate-controlled building
  • Planned output: 3.4 million kg of leafy greens and herbs per year
  • AI-driven automation and robotics take produce from seed to sealed pack without direct human handling, with end-to-end digital traceability

The US push

Stacked Farm opened a research and customer experience centre in Las Vegas in September and is in the closing stages of financing its first US production farm in Southern California, a US$126 million automated site backed by long-term supply agreements with West Coast wholesalers. Over the next five years it plans ten farms across major US markets. To fund the next phase, it has started an A$45 million capital raise.

Why it matters

“The industry’s remaining challenge is proving it can do so reliably, repeatedly and economically at commercial scale,” says founder Daniel Tzvetkoff. The company says it refined its platform and unit economics before expanding abroad, unlike operators that scaled too fast.

Rocks take

Lettuce without weather risk is the promise; the Melbourne opening will show whether the economics hold. All figures are company statements.
