On paper, the iPhone Duo is a serious first foldable from Apple: IP68, a 3000-nit inner display and the A20 Pro chip tick the right boxes, but the $1,999 price and the real-world behavior of the hinge will need to be validated once units ship on October 23.

Note: this is a first look based on Apple's official September 9, 2026 announcement and the detailed reporting that followed — not a review of a retail unit, which ships October 23.

The iPhone Duo is Apple's answer to the foldable question, and the company has clearly spent time on the hardest part: the hinge. Machined from more than 100 components, it is designed to hold the display flat when open and close with a satisfying magnet-assisted snap.

Design and displays

Grade 5 titanium in two colors (star white and night sky) houses a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch cover screen. The inner panel peaks at 3000 nits, and a nano-texture finish works to hide the crease — the perennial complaint about foldables.

Cameras and performance

A 48MP Fusion main camera pairs with a 48MP ultra-wide, with sensor-shift stabilization and 4K120 Dolby Vision video. The A20 Pro chip shared with the iPhone 18 Pro line powers Split View multitasking, finally bringing side-by-side apps to iPhone.

Verdict

Apple arrives with more than a me-too design: IP68 on a foldable, a hidden under-display FaceTime camera and a $1,999 price that positions it firmly as a premium flagship. The remaining questions — crease durability and hinge longevity — can only be answered after launch.
