German smart-home firm Tado unveiled its Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) in early September. At just 17.8mm thick, it claims the title of thinnest smart thermostat on the market, roughly twice as slim as most rivals.
A new design and a rechargeable battery
The new model gets a matte-white finish, a minimalist LED display and a circular touch interface that only appears when you touch it. A customizable top button offers three shortcuts: show room humidity, resume the heating schedule, or trigger a 30-minute boost. Disposable batteries are gone in favor of a USB-C rechargeable battery rated for over a year per charge.
Matter, Thread, and a shot at Nest
Built on Matter and Thread, the thermostat slots into the major smart-home ecosystems. Tado is explicitly courting former Nest users left behind by Google's exit from the European thermostat market. The wired starter kit costs £159.99 / €179.99, the wireless kit £169.99 / €199.99.
