DIY thermostat install: the C-Wire question

Apple says both thermostats are “DIY-friendly,” work with a broad range of HVAC systems and include on-device wire detection. Smart thermostats need constant 24V power, which normally comes from a C (common) wire. Before buying:

  1. Turn off power to the HVAC system at the breaker.
  2. Remove your current thermostat’s faceplate and photograph the wiring and terminal labels (R/Rh/Rc, W, Y, G, C).
  3. If there’s no wire on the C terminal, check for an unused wire tucked behind the wall plate, or plan on the C‑Wire Power Adapter for your brand of thermostat ($24.95), installed at the furnace/air handler control board.
  4. High-voltage (120/240V) baseboard heaters are a different setup; Apple doesn’t list them, so don’t assume compatibility.

Thermostats can read temperature and humidity from the standalone sensors or from sensors built into HomeView, HomePod and HomePod mini. In the contiguous U.S., Clean Energy Guidance can shift heating and cooling to cheaper, cleaner periods with a compatible utility plan.

Thread, Matter and Home Assistant

Every product supports Thread; the thermostats, sensors and lock are Matter compatible. That means they should be pairable with Home Assistant’s Matter integration as a secondary controller via Matter multi-admin — but Apple doesn’t describe Home Assistant support, and features like Adaptive Temperature live in the Home app. Treat HA control as likely for basics (setpoints, lock/unlock) and unconfirmed for the rest. The cameras and doorbell aren’t listed as Matter devices and rely on HomeKit Secure Video and iCloud+.

All accessories require an iPhone for NFC setup and a home hub such as Apple HomeView, HomePod or Apple TV 4K. Apple Retail will also offer paid ADT installation in the U.S.
