Two Chinese foldables before Apple's keynote

On Monday, September 8, 2026, Huawei and Xiaomi unveiled their new flagship foldable smartphones, ramping up competition in China's premium handset market just ahead of Apple's event the following day. According to Reuters, Huawei introduced the Mate XT2, a tri-fold smartphone, at a launch in Guangzhou.

Xiaomi 18 Fold: in-house chip and aggressive pricing

The Xiaomi 18 Fold runs Xiaomi's in-house XRing O3 processor, which CEO Lei Jun claims outperforms Apple's A19 Pro in responsiveness. It uses DRAM chips supplied by Chinese memory maker CXMT. Pricing ranges from 10,999 yuan (about $1,540) to 14,999 yuan (about $2,100).

Pressure mounts on Apple

The launches came as Apple was about to unveil its iPhone Duo, its first foldable, on September 9. Huawei remains one of the few major players shipping a tri-fold at volume.
