Bought a new Withings scale and planning to put your weight on a Home Assistant dashboard? There’s a new catch. Withings’ developer portal says Withings+ “becomes required” on its free Start for Free API plan from October 12, 2026, as Smart Home Assistant UK reports.
Who is affected
- Accounts created after the cutoff: a Withings+ membership is needed to share health data with an app on the free plan
- Older accounts: not affected, according to Withings
- The Home Assistant Withings docs carry the same warning, but give October 11 as the date
Why does it hit Home Assistant? The official integration doesn’t talk to your scale directly. You create a free Withings developer app, paste its client ID and secret into Home Assistant, and Withings pushes data by webhook. That developer app is exactly the kind of “free-plan app” the new rule covers.
How much
In the UK, Withings+ costs £8.95 a month or £89.50 a year. Withings hasn’t said whether the exemption for existing accounts is permanent, or what happens if you delete and recreate your developer app. Local Smart Home Guide sums it up as “less local”.
Rocks take
If your integration already works, don’t touch it: don’t delete the developer app or recreate the account. If you’re buying now, a Bluetooth scale read locally (via ESPHome or a Bluetooth proxy) avoids both the cloud and the subscription. Paying monthly just to see your own weight in Home Assistant is a hard sell.
