Breed the plant to the LED rack—not the other way around. On October 1–2, 2026, VerticalFarmDaily covered Michele Butturini’s Wageningen University & Research PhD defence on vertical-farming ideotypes.

The bottleneck

Sector surveys in the dissertation note rapid VF expansion, bankruptcies, and lighting as the dominant cost—yet virtually no cultivars bred specifically for stacked indoor farms.

Model findings

  • 3D structural–photosynthesis model of dwarf tomato under LED canopies, calibrated on climate-chamber plants
  • Key traits: leaf angle, leaf curvature, leaflet angle
  • Steeper, moderately curved leaves push light deeper instead of saturating top leaves
  • At high density, best architectures yielded up to 12% more fruit biomass vs reference (about 2.4% at low density)
  • Ripening fruit intercepted 16–23% of canopy-absorbed light—fruit position matters too

Maximising light interception and maximising assimilate production favoured different shapes; assimilate-optimised plants produced more fruit despite slightly less total absorption. Shape and planting density must be chosen together.

FAQ

Is +12% field-proven commercially? It is a validated simulation search against chamber experiments, not a multi-site commercial trial claim.

Which crop? Dwarf tomato ideotypes under vertical-farm LEDs.
