Tesla's Robotaxi program has crossed a symbolic milestone: more than 1 million miles driven with no one behind the wheel. The figure was announced at the Cybercab event in Austin on September 3, 2026, by Tesla VP of AI Ashok Elluswamy, who framed it as "a testament to safety."
A sharp acceleration in six weeks
As recently as late July, Tesla reported 380,000 unsupervised miles during its Q2 earnings update. In roughly six weeks, the fleet added about 620,000 miles — an acceleration that follows the company's decision to remove in-vehicle safety monitors from most operations outside the San Francisco Bay Area.
Still far behind Waymo
For context, Waymo claims more than 200 million fully autonomous rider-only miles. Tesla's fleet remains modest by comparison, but it is growing at a double-digit weekly rate according to the company.
Next stop: Las Vegas
The expansion doesn't stop in Austin. Tesla has secured a Nevada operating permit, putting Las Vegas at the center of its regional rollout, and is targeting 24/7 service "in the next month or so" according to Elluswamy.
