After nearly nine years, Tesla showed its second-generation Roadster at a SpaceX test site in Texas. The car drove up a ramp and stopped upside down, then jumped over a row of Teslas and rolled in mid-air on cold-gas thrusters. The price is still a mystery.
What we know
- Price: not announced for any version. The last official price, from 2017, was $200,000.
- Production: 2028, according to Elon Musk.
- Range: over 300 miles, according to Tesla, roughly half the 620 miles promised in 2017.
- Top speed: over 230 mph.
- 0-60 mph: under 1 second with the Thrust option; 0.81 s was timed during the demo.
- Seats: two, down from four in 2017.
Three versions
- Performance: two seats, active aero and a suction system for downforce. $50,000 deposit.
- Thrust: adds rear thrusters for 0-60 mph in under 1 second. Limited release, $250,000 deposit.
- Rocket: one seat, thrusters all around the car, “it can fly.” Invite only, and not approved for public roads.
How the thrusters work
Tesla says ten thrusters run on about 600 liters of compressed air, in tanks the car refills itself. The suction system creates enough downforce to hold the car upside down, even when stopped. Whether these features are legal on public roads isn’t clear.
For reservation holders
The Performance deposit is still $50,000. Electrek reports $5,000 is refundable at order and the other $45,000 is due within 10 days. Tesla hasn’t said what happens to 2017 reservations.
