California’s home batteries just flexed harder than ever. On October 8, 2026, Tesla Energy said that on the evening of October 6, 85,774 Powerwall homes across the state dispatched more than 600 MW to the grid — a peak of 601 MW and 932 MWh delivered — according to TeslaNorth, citing Tesla’s dashboard.
The numbers
- Participating homes: 85,774
- Participating peak power: 601 MW (~7 kW per home)
- Energy delivered during the event: 932 MWh
- Whole California Powerwall fleet (including non-participants) peaked at 634 MW
- CAISO statewide demand hit 45,622 MW at 5 p.m. that Tuesday
How a VPP works
A Virtual Power Plant links thousands of home batteries so they discharge together when the grid is stressed. Owners keep a Backup Reserve in the Tesla app and can opt out. Pay comes through California programs such as DSGS and ELRP; the CPUC quotes $2 per kWh for non-residential ELRP participants, and Tesla’s 2022 PG&E pilot cited the same rate for extra discharge. Tesla paid $9.9 million to US VPP participants in 2024.
Beating September
The previous Powerwall-only mark was about 69,000 homes and more than 500 MW on September 9. A combined Sunrun–Tesla figure of 580 MW followed on September 21. Tuesday’s 601 MW tops both. Tesla’s post did not say which program called the event or what owners will earn.
Rocks take
Home batteries are now a real grid asset. If you already run a Powerwall with Home Assistant, this is the kind of evening where your backup reserve setting suddenly matters.
