Tesla’s volume cars can finally power a house. On October 6, 2026, Tesla Energy announced that Powershare Home Backup is available for new Model 3 and Model Y with a Powerwall 3, reports Electrek. Until now, only the Cybertruck could do it.

How it works

  • Plug the car into a Wall Connector or Universal Wall Connector at a home with a Powerwall 3
  • When the grid fails, the car’s battery extends the home backup
  • Tesla quotes over two days of extra backup for a home using 30 kWh a day, from a 90% charge (Standard trims: up to two days; Cybertruck: more than three)
  • Maximum continuous output of 11.52 kW with the Powerwall setup
  • No extra hardware if you already have a Powerwall 3 and Wall Connector, but Tesla support must enable it

The fine print

  • Guaranteed on cars ordered on or after October 1, 2026, in the US and Puerto Rico
  • Older cars: “some, but not all” have the PCS2 Lite inverter; check Software > Additional Vehicle Information > Powershare Support
  • Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ support is “coming soon”; no grid export for Model 3/Y; Model S and X are not included

The launch landed the same day as software update 2026.38.3, which also adds Emergency Drive Away, according to TeslaNorth. Electrek points out Ford offered home backup on the F-150 Lightning back in 2022.

Rocks take

For a smart home, a 75 kWh-class battery on wheels that integrates with your Powerwall is a big deal. Europeans will have to wait: this is US and Puerto Rico only.
