Tesla FSD v15: AI chief details the safety gains coming next

Tesla is preparing its next major Full Self-Driving (Supervised) update — v15 — and its AI chief has just spelled out the safety ambitions behind it. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's VP of AI, says the coming version is expected to predict hazards earlier, react faster and deliver major gains in safety and collision avoidance.

"Even earlier prediction of hazards"

The comments follow a Tesla owner's account of a close call: a car pulled from a parking lot into his path on a busy road while FSD was active, and the vehicle steered away before he could respond. Elluswamy replied: "Glad you are safe. Even earlier prediction of hazards, even faster reaction time and overall significantly better safety and collision avoidance coming as part of the next big upgrade (v15)."

A much larger model

Elon Musk has previously described a far bigger driving model for this new generation, putting the increase at roughly 10 times the parameter count of the current model — moving from around 1 billion parameters to about 10 billion. A larger model offers more capacity for processing complex road interactions and anticipating how other road users may behave, though size alone doesn't guarantee better performance: training data, architecture and validation remain decisive.

Already running in Robotaxis

Development has moved beyond simulation: during Tesla's Q2 2026 earnings call, Elluswamy said early FSD v15 software was already running in the company's Robotaxi fleet. Tesla has not announced a public rollout date; earlier reporting points to the larger v15 architecture arriving around late 2026 or early 2027. Meanwhile, v14.3.9 is already rolling out Automatic Collision Evasion, which draws on the FSD stack even during manual driving.
