Czechia has formally recognised the provisional Full Self-Driving (Supervised) approval granted to Tesla in the Netherlands, reports electrive. The driver-assistance system can now be used in seven EU member states.

This was not a standard EU type approval, but a provisional approval issued under Article 39 of EU Regulation 2018/858, intended for new technologies not yet fully covered by existing EU rules.

A decision months in the making

The Czech Ministry of Transport spent months examining the system's functionality and the conditions of its European approval, holding talks at the EU level and with Tesla representatives.

A "pioneering" country for autonomous driving

"The Czech Republic is among the European leaders in autonomous driving technologies," said Transport Minister Ivan Bednárik. Czechia joins five other states that had already recognised the Dutch approval: Lithuania (May 20), Estonia (May 29), Denmark (June 9), Belgium (June 10) and Slovenia (September 7).

An EU-wide vote is imminent

A vote on EU-wide recognition of the Dutch approval could come as early as October 6, according to a Tesla press release from early September.
