Tesla on Autopilot stopped before deadly Mesa crash, filing shows

An unexplained sudden stop

A Tesla involved in a fatal crash last year on Loop 202 in Mesa, Arizona was in self-driving (Autopilot) mode when it suddenly came to an unexplained stop, according to a recent filing, reports AZFamily. The driver, Jason Key, a father of two, was killed in the crash.

Redacted portions

In its submission to the federal agency, Tesla redacted several parts, including the crash narrative and whether Autopilot was engaged. The automaker told the NHTSA the marked information was "proprietary, confidential" material. Attorney John Nohinek of Witherite Law Group said the redactions make it difficult to determine how and why the crash happened.

The phantom braking investigation

The NHTSA opened an investigation into phantom braking back in 2022 after more than 350 complaints of unexpected braking on Tesla vehicles. It remains a recurring concern for owners.
