The most honest product rename of the week came from Tesla — but only in Europe. On October 9, 2026, Electrek reported that Tesla’s German site no longer mentions Full Self-Driving; the old URL now redirects to Tesla Assisted Driving.
Why the name changed
Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport said on October 6 that “FSD – Full Self-Driving Supervised” is misleading because the system does not take over the full driving task. The driver must stay attentive and remains fully responsible. Tesla offered the new name in September talks with Transport Minister Steffen Bilger. Elon Musk replied on X with “Danke schön.”
The speed deal
- Germany will back Tesla in the EU approval process if the system stays within 10% over the speed limit
- Reuters previously reported the Netherlands-approved version allows up to 50% over the detected limit
- Tesla will need to change FSD behavior to meet the German cap
What did not change
The German page still says the car will drive you “almost anywhere” under supervision, still cites a “7x safer” claim versus an estimated US average (Tesla’s own footnote), and still promotes Robotaxi and Cybercab. In the US, tesla.com/fsd still sells Full Self-Driving (Supervised) for $99 per month.
EU status
Eight countries are listed as approved (Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, Czechia, Croatia). Germany is not on the list yet. A bloc-wide vote needs 15 of 27 member states representing 65% of the EU population and has slipped to December at the earliest; France and Sweden have raised speeding concerns.
Rocks take
“Assisted Driving” is the name the feature always deserved. The interesting question is how long Tesla keeps selling the old label in California while Berlin gets the honest one.
