Ring Smart Lock: Recharge a Dead Battery by Turning a Dial

Ring is coming for your front door lock. On October 7, 2026, the Amazon-owned brand announced the Ring Smart Lock, its first lock, built around a simple idea: a dead battery should never leave you stuck outside.

The power dial

If the battery runs out, you turn a built-in power dial a few times and the lock powers back up so you can get in. Ring founder Jamie Siminoff told TechCrunch that the battery should last about a year; once inside, you remove the rechargeable pack and charge it, and the app warns you when it is time.

Four ways in

  • Fingerprint reader
  • Backlit touchscreen keypad
  • Ring app
  • Alexa voice control

Smart features

  • Lock and check status remotely; scheduled access, for example a dog walker every Tuesday from 2 to 3 p.m.
  • Connected through Amazon Sidewalk for remote locking, status updates and PIN syncing without relying on home Wi-Fi; unlocking happens on the device
  • Works with Ring doorbells, cameras and alarms, and with Echo devices; events appear in the Ring app feed
  • Fits a standard single-cylinder deadbolt, no extra wiring

Availability

US only, in early 2027 (TechCrunch says the first quarter, after FCC authorisation), in black, silver and brass. No price yet. Ring also announced four new 4K cameras, including a pan-tilt Indoor Cam 4K.

Rocks take

The dial solves the number-one fear about smart locks. Neither source mentions Matter, so Home Assistant users should wait for the full spec sheet before planning around it.
