Colourful houseplants to give your home an autumnal feel

As autumn arrives, indoor gardeners are turning to colourful plants to warm up their homes: gingerbread-toned orchids, the bright orange flowers of Calathea crocata or the deep-purple leaves of oxalis, lists The Irish News.

"Flowering houseplants have hit a bit of a trend and are really starting to compete more in sales," says Claire Bishop, senior houseplant buyer at Dobbies Garden Centres, speaking to the newspaper.

A tired garden, an interior to revive

After a long summer, outdoor gardens often lack colour. Claire Bishop sees it clearly: "when we look into our gardens now, they are not looking as happy as they have done previously at this time of year. There's a lack of colour, a lack of flower." Hence the idea of bringing that colour indoors.

A simple trick for a successful autumnal interior: group warm-toned plants (orange, purple, burgundy) near windows where autumn light flatters them, and ease off on watering as the days shorten.
