OpenAI, Anthropic and Google discuss a shared AI standards body

According to Seoul Economic Daily, Anthropic, OpenAI and Google have been discussing the creation of an artificial intelligence standards body, as calls to slow the pace of AI development gain traction.

On September 12, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed a three-step deceleration plan: independent evaluators for AI companies, joint safety standards among major players, and a shared framework. OpenAI's Sam Altman has also mentioned the need for a "brake".

An unsustainable pace

According to Artificial Analysis, the median release interval for frontier AI models dropped from 37.5 days in 2023 to 11 days in 2026. That acceleration, described as "exhausting" for IT buyers, is now pushing rivals to consider common rules.

Not everyone agrees: Aidan Gomez, CEO of Cohere, mocked the plan on X as "a great idea from the cartel", arguing such regulation would crush smaller competitors.
