AI is moving into the tomato rows. Berlin-based hexafarms has raised a €4.8 million seed round, reported on October 6, 2026 by Tech Funding News and AgNavigator, to scale its operating system for commercial horticulture.

Who invested

The round was led by Ananda Impact Ventures and Green Generation Fund, with Grey Silo Ventures and better ventures, alongside existing backers Speedinvest, Mudcake and Techstars. hexafarms also secured Rentenbank’s Startup Grant and a subordinated loan of up to €800,000.

How the system works

  • Wireless sensors log climate, fertigation, substrate, drainage and light every five minutes
  • Forecast models use 70+ parameters for rolling harvest forecasts per crop and zone
  • Robots scan every plant daily across two to three hectares to catch pests and disease early
  • AI models cover about 50 cultivars: tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, aubergines, berries
  • Plugs into Priva, Hoogendoorn and Ridder climate computers; growers pay a subscription and hexafarms owns the hardware

Traction

More than 50 growers in 13 countries use it, including SanLucar and the cooperatives Elo and Royal ZON, and the company says over €300 million of produce was managed on its system in 2026. CEO David Ahmed claims even the best growers leave up to 30% on the table. The money goes to DACH, Benelux and Spain.

Rocks take

The same recipe as a smart home, at hectare scale: sensors, a model, automations. The 30% figure is a company claim worth watching.
