Searching email while you’re carrying groceries or driving is miserable. Google’s answer is Gmail Live. In an October 15, 2026 post on the Workspace Updates blog, Google says this voice experience is now rolling out to paid Google Workspace customers and Google AI subscribers on Android and iOS.
How it works
Gmail Live uses Google’s latest Gemini models for low-latency, inbox-aware voice search. You ask a question naturally and hear a synthesized answer built from your emails. Google’s examples:
- “What is the order status for Black Forest Construction Supply?”
- “When is my next mandatory training due?”
- “Show me the latest update from my manager, John.”
- “What gate is my flight leaving from tomorrow?”
Two improvements arrive with this rollout: an email source card at every conversational turn, so you can check which messages the answer came from, and the ability to pick the voice you prefer.
How to start
On a supported phone, tap the Live entry point in the Gmail search bar. The first time, Gmail asks for microphone access. For organisations with Gemini in Workspace, the feature is on by default and respects existing smart-feature and personalisation settings.
Who gets it
- Business Starter, Standard and Plus; Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus; Frontline Plus; Nonprofits
- Add-ons: Gemini Business, Gemini Enterprise, AI Expanded Access, AI Ultra Access; Google AI Pro for Education
- Consumers: Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra
The rollout is gradual, with up to 15 days for the feature to appear from October 15. Important limit: for now it’s only available to users in the US with EN-US as their language.
Rocks take
The source cards are the right call: a voice answer about your flight or an order is only useful if you can verify it in one tap. It’s also a reminder of where assistants are going — an AI that reads your inbox is the same building block as one that reads your smart-home logs. For our French, Spanish and Italian readers, though, it’s a wait: Google hasn’t given a date for other languages or the EU.
