Gemini for Home update: more reliable routines and accurate Matter switches

Google’s monthly Gemini for Home update, covered by Android Police on October 1, isn’t flashy, but it fixes things DIY users run into every day.

Routines behave more predictably

When a routine is started by voice or set to run on a specific speaker or display, Gemini now treats its written custom commands as if you had spoken them directly to that device. In practice, a “Good night” routine with custom commands should act the same way as saying those commands out loud in that room.

Better hearing, lower latency

  • Gemini understands commands better in noisy rooms.
  • Everyday tasks like alarms and timers respond faster.
  • Households speaking up to three languages should be understood better.

Google Home app fixes that matter for DIY setups

  • Matter switches now show their real status; some didn’t reflect their state when offline in the All Devices tab.
  • Dimming a light or group to 0% now turns it off instead of leaving it at minimum.
  • Automations now show the parent device name for multi-button switches and subdevices.
  • Online cameras and doorbells get filled icons, and Nest setup is more reliable on iOS and Android.

DIY take

If you run Matter switches alongside Google Home in a US install, re-check the All Devices tab and any routine that relied on custom commands. If you also use Home Assistant, it’s a good moment to compare states on both sides.
