Open-ear audio is getting a sport sibling and a flagship refresh. On September 17, 2026, SoundGuys and Phandroid covered Bose’s dual launch: Sport Open Earbuds at $199 and Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen) at $299. Preorders open September 19; general availability October 1 on Bose.com and select retailers.
Shared open-ear DNA
Both use Bose OpenAudio—a transducer plus tightly controlled acoustic path that delivers air-conducted sound near the ear rather than bone conduction—and deliberately skip ANC so you keep situational awareness for traffic, announcements, and conversation. Both add AI-enhanced SpeechClarity (dedicated mic + voice pickup per bud), Auto Volume that rides ambient noise, Bluetooth 5.4 multipoint, SBC/AAC, Google Fast Pair, and a three-band EQ in the Bose app. Customizable shortcuts can target Spotify Tap or the phone’s native assistant. A post-launch firmware update is promised for Google Find Hub, Alexa+, and Apple Music shortcuts.
Sport Open: built to move
New SKU for runners and workouts: soft silicone C-arm cuff, textured physical buttons for sweaty fingers, IP54 sweat/splash/dust rating, and a wireless charging case with a translucent textured lid that stands upright. Bose cites up to 7 hours playback plus additional hours in the case (about 22 hours case reserve in company materials). Colors: Black, White Smoke, limited Eucalyptus Green.
Ultra Open 2nd Gen: louder, wider, longer
Same $299 price class as gen-1 with a re-engineered driver for deeper bass and higher volume, Cinema Mode via TrueSpatial for a wider soundstage on video and podcasts, Snapdragon Sound / aptX Adaptive on compatible Android devices, refined metallic cap, and wireless charging case. Battery: up to 9 hours (about 5 hours with Immersive Audio enabled per SoundGuys) and roughly 28.5 hours system total. Limited colors include Cherry Chocolate, Olive Green, and Sky Pink.
Rocks take
Buy Sport if you actually run; buy Ultra 2 if you live in the cuff all day and want Cinema Mode. Neither replaces ANC cans for flights. Independent roundups: SoundGuys, Phandroid; Bose’s press room for full color/SKU lists.
