Dual-screen handhelds are back. On October 16, 2026, Anbernic opened pre-orders for the RG DDS, a clamshell Android console that looks a lot like a Nintendo 3DS XL, Notebookcheck reports.

Price and availability

  • 8 GB + 128 GB: $299.99, or $284.99 during pre-orders
  • 12 GB + 256 GB: $364.99, or $349.99 during pre-orders
  • Colors: Glacier White, Basalt Black and Phantom Blue
  • Shipping starts gradually on December 10, 2026, according to Anbernic’s product page

Specs

The top screen is a 4.7-inch IPS panel (1200 x 720), the bottom one a 4-inch IPS touchscreen (960 x 720), both rated at 500 nits. Inside, a Qualcomm Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 runs Android 16, with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, a 6,000mAh battery with 27W charging, and active cooling with a fan and heat pipe. You also get capacitive joysticks, a gyroscope, a microSD slot (up to 2 TB), a headphone jack, 1080p video out over USB-C and a retractable stylus built into the body. It weighs 434 g.

The box includes a USB cable and two screen protectors, but no microSD card this time, and there’s no official case yet. Anbernic also lists AI features such as game guides and real-time translation; we can’t judge those until we try it.

Pricier than its main rival

The Verge and Engadget point out the price: almost double what the original 3DS cost. Notebookcheck compares it with the Retroid Pocket Duo ($269, or $249 until October 31), which has 120Hz OLED screens where the RG DDS uses 60Hz IPS panels. In return, Anbernic offers the more powerful chip and the built-in stylus.

Rocks take

It’s a tempting gadget for Android games and streaming from a PC, and the stylus is a smart touch. But at this price, with IPS screens and a December ship date, we’d wait for the first reviews, especially on screen quality and fan noise. And remember: emulation is only legal with games you own.
