Amazon just retired the Fire tablet brand for its new slate. On October 8, 2026, Devices VP Kevin Keith announced Amazon Alexa Tablets — three aluminum Android devices with full Google Play access and Alexa+ baked into the OS. TechCrunch and other outlets covered the pivot the same week.

The lineup

  • Alexa Tablet 12 Pro — 12-inch 120Hz 3:2 display, from $499.99; Corning Nanomatte anti-glare from $549.99; up to 16GB RAM; Pro Pen ($89.99) and Pro Keyboard ($149.99)
  • Alexa Tablet 11 — 11-inch ~2.5K 90Hz, from $329.99
  • Alexa Tablet 8 — 8.7-inch portable, from $229.99

All three run Android (launching with Android 16, Android 17 on the roadmap) so YouTube, Netflix, Gmail and Google Docs install from Play without sideload tricks — alongside Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, Amazon Music and Luna.

Alexa+ and Kindle Sanctuary

A dedicated Ask Alexa control and voice wake bring context-aware help without leaving the current app. On-Screen Intelligence (off by default, opt-in) can read what is on screen; live sessions drop the wake word between turns. Open a Kindle book and the tablet enters a distraction-free “sanctuary” mode Amazon rates for up to 20 hours of reading.

When it ships

Preorders are open. Shipments begin October 14, 2026 in the US, Mexico and Canada, and October 19 in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Kids Tablet bundles were announced alongside.

Rocks take

Ditching Fire OS was the overdue move. If Alexa+ smart-home control feels first-class on these IEEE tablets, they become interesting Home Assistant companion screens — not just Prime Video slabs.
