Tesla's FSD v14 Lite is coming to Model S and Model X (Hardware 3)

Owners of Model S and Model X cars running Hardware 3 (HW3/AI3) are finally catching up. Tesla AI chief Ashok Elluswamy confirmed in early September that FSD v14 Lite for the older flagship vehicles is ready and should roll out "very soon".

An imminent launch

Asked at the Cybercab launch, Elluswamy told journalist Ryan McCaffrey: "Oh, I thought it was supposed to go out last week." The rollout therefore appears imminent, after months of waiting for Model S and Model X owners.

Hardware 3 finally served, after Model 3 and Model Y

FSD v14 Lite arrived in June in early access, then rolled out publicly in July — but only on HW3 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. HW3 Model S and Model X owners, by contrast, got nothing. That wait now appears to be ending.

A "distilled" build for older hardware

FSD v14 Lite is a lightweight edition of the v14 architecture, compressed to run on HW3. The older computer has roughly 15% of the memory bandwidth of Hardware 4 (HW4/AI4), a hard physical ceiling for onboard neural networks. Tesla therefore "distilled" the main v14 branch's parameters so HW3 can mimic the driving decisions of the larger model.

Until Tesla delivers the promised HW3 computer upgrades, v14 Lite remains the best way for legacy vehicles to enjoy modern self-driving capability.
