Tesla launches the Cybercab in Austin: a robotaxi with no steering wheel or pedals

Tesla officially launched its Cybercab on September 3, 2026 in Austin, Texas: a two-seat electric vehicle with no steering wheel, no pedals and no conventional mirrors, featuring butterfly doors and a gold body. It is Tesla's first purpose-built autonomous vehicle, folded into the company's robotaxi service previously operated with modified Model Ys.

The Robotaxi app now offers a choice between the Cybercab (2 passengers) and the Model Y (4 passengers). According to regulatory filings relayed by Teslarati, the Cybercab packs a 48 kWh battery, a single 219-horsepower front motor and an EPA-adjusted range near 290 to 300 miles. It relies on a camera-only Full Self-Driving stack and the AI4 computer, with no lidar or radar.

A launch under conditions

Elon Musk has long cited a target price around $30,000. Tesla also opened a public interest form for companies wanting to buy Cybercab fleets. Tesla's autonomous service already runs in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa; broader deployment remains subject to regulatory approval.
