TCL P80 Ultra: OLED Phone That Turns Into Paper

TCL finally put OLED under its Nxtpaper trick. The P80 Ultra, shown at IFA 2026, is the first Nxtpaper phone with a color OLED that can flip into monochrome Max Ink Mode for reading and lower power use — instead of the LCD-only Nxtpaper phones that came before.

Previous Nxtpaper handsets lived on LCD. At MWC earlier in 2026, TCL showed OLED Nxtpaper tech without a shipping phone. The P80 Ultra is that product: a 6.83-inch panel with 1.5K resolution, 120Hz, peak brightness up to 3,200 nits, and full DCI-P3 coverage, plus TCL’s anti-glare coating aimed at outdoor readability.

Max Ink Mode is the point

Most of the time it behaves like a normal Android phone. Hit the dedicated Nxtpaper Key and Max Ink Mode kicks in: monochrome paper-like look, a stripped-back Android UI with fewer apps and notifications, and e-reader-focused software. TCL claims the 5,800mAh battery can stretch to seven days of active use in that mode, or up to 26 days of standby — figures that will need real-world testing, but they explain why the dual-mode pitch matters.

The Verge’s Dominic Preston tried the Ultra on the IFA floor and said the matte anti-glare OLED held up unusually well under bright show lighting, even if the finish takes a moment to get used to.

Midrange guts, premium feel

Elsewhere the Ultra sits in upper midrange: MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Elite, 8GB RAM, up to 512GB storage, 45W wired charging. Cameras include a 50MP main (1/1.56-inch), 8MP ultrawide, and a welcome 50MP 3x telephoto. Software is Android 16, with four OS upgrades and seven years of security for Ultra and Pro.

Two siblings join it: P80 Pro keeps the OLED Nxtpaper story but drops to a dual rear camera (no telephoto). Base P80 keeps OLED but loses Nxtpaper entirely and uses a smaller 5,000mAh battery — so it is a different product despite the name.

Price and where you can buy it

Europe launch pricing starts at €549 for the Ultra, €429 for the Pro, and €349 for the base P80. Latin America is slated for October; the U.S. comes “a bit later,” TCL told The Verge. That makes this a distinctive Android display story now for European buyers, and a wait-and-see for everyone else.

If you want one phone that is both a bright OLED daily driver and a distraction-light reader without carrying a separate e-ink slab, the P80 Ultra is TCL’s clearest answer yet — specs on paper look competitive; battery claims in Max Ink Mode are the claim to stress-test.
