Google Pics: Google's New AI Design Tool Takes Aim at Canva in Workspace

Google is entering the creative design market with Google Pics, a new AI image-generation and editing tool aimed squarely at Canva and Adobe Express, TechCrunch reports.

Prompt to create, not design from scratch

Unlike Canva, where you start from templates, Google Pics is built around prompting: describe the visual you want and the tool generates it. Use cases include posters, social media posts, illustrations, and presentation visuals.

It also ships editing tools — isolate and transform objects, modify or translate text inside an image, and generate several variations of a request so you can pick the best one.

Built into Workspace, powered by Nano Banana

Google Pics is powered by the Nano Banana image-generation model. It's built into Google Workspace, starting with Docs and Slides (rolling out today) and later Google Drive. It will reach most Workspace customers and Google AI Pro or Ultra subscribers over the coming weeks.

A collaborative alternative

Google Pics supports collaborative editing, letting teams already working in Docs and Slides generate and refine visuals without leaving their workflow.
